For his high school spring break, Michael convinced nine of his white classmates to camp in the Florida Everglades with their African-American gym coach even though he didn't have adequate knowledge of tenting. In 1980 hotel staff in southern Georgia weren't enthusiastic about renting a room to a black man with ten high school students in a crowded van. Eventually they camped in a mosquito filled campground with alligators and crocodiles not too far from their pillows.
